Should I see a gynecologist or a general practitioner for a pap test?

I live in BC Canada and I am not sure whether I should see my family doctor for a pap test or a gynecologist. I’m not even sure if I can make an appointment with a gynecologist without a referral.
Does anyone know anything? thanks

I believe you have to see a gynecologist for a pap smear; I don’t know of any family doctors that do them around here.

You don’t need a referral. Just call them up, tell them you’re a new patient wanting to come in for an exam. If you’re sexually active, you should definately get a pap smear done.

you can see either for a pap. things to consider are, are you comfortable with your GP doing your pap. does your insurance cover OBGYNs both are qualified to do the procedure.
