yes, pediatricians can definitely test for that kind of thing.
You can test yourself now, actually. Go to the grocery store or pharmacy and get a Vaginal Screening Test (I think that’s what they’re called). Anyway, you pee on a stick or in a cup and put the stick in the cup and it tells you what’s wrong if anything based on the pH levels of your pee. Then you can buy some Monistat and/or Nature’s Cure yeast pills (take them everyday for a month…helps regulate your pH and yeast levels). You can also treat it by taking garlic pills, but I haven’t actually tried that before. But to answer your original question, yes the pediatrician can test it, or you can test it, or the gyno can test it. Hope you feel better soon!
At 16 it is time to get a gynecologist, even though you aren’t sexually active. They also test for things like cancer and make sure everything is healthy female wise. They always explain step by step what they are doing. Let them know it is your first visit and they should try to put you at ease best they can.
And yes, you can also go to the drugstore and test to see if it’s a yeast infection on your own. If the kit says it is a yeast infection then you can also treat it yourself. If you go to the gynecologist though, they can answer all your questions and go over the different types of remedies.
Since you are so young & not sexually active (good for you) & it seems you are seeing a pediatrician, then by all means do go to your usual doctor with whom you feel comfortable. He/She can test you easily & treat you or at least refer you to a good family doctor. It is not actually necessary at the age of 16 yrs if you’re not sexually active to go to a GYN. You can wait until like 19 or so. However, you may want in the future (when you are ready) to make an appt. with a GYN to discuss things that you should know & learn what is the best things to do to keep yourself well. It’s a good idea to discuss things like birth control before having sex. When you are ready to go, make sure you tell the doctor it is your first time & that you are nervous. Also to chose one, I usually ask women I know if they like their doctors. I don’t recommend over the counter yeast test because you are too young.
